    Multivariate Statistical Analysis 1: Dimension Reduction https://dresa.org.au/events/multivariate-statistical-analysis-1-dimension-reduction-67f6104b-825b-491b-8568-aa12451eaa64 **Multivariate Statistical Analysis 1: Dimension Reduction** In multivariate statistics we simultaneously model and estimate variability in more than one variable often in order to examine the relationship between variables. This workshop examines the key aspects of moving from univariate to multivariate analysis, and the situations and scenarios where multivariate analysis is typically applied. The focus will be on practical application of concepts through examples. **Topics covered will include:** - Motivations for undertaking multivariate analysis - Statistical principles for multivariate analysis - Dimension reduction techniques including principal components analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), correspondence analysis (CA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) This is just one workshop from a modular training programme made up of 1.5 hour workshops, each focusing on a single statistical method offered by Statistical Consulting within the Sydney Informatics Hub. Statistical Workflows giving practical step-by-step instructions applicable in any software are used and include experimental design, exploratory analysis, modelling, assumption testing, model interpretation and presentation of results. Researchers are encouraged to design a custom programme tailored to their research needs. **Pre-requisites** Prior experience with statistical modelling is assumed, as the basics of regression modelling will not be covered. Please consider attending Linear Models 1 and/or Linear Models 2 workshops to come up to speed beforehand. The course builds from the basic, pioneering methodologies of Social Network Analysis (SNA): survey-based egonet SNA and sociometric, "whole network' SNA, and their extensions, to network sensitive ethnographies, community networks, web-based network surveys and research on social media activities. The course reviews the possibilities for working with rich network data from interview or online sources and the unique perspectives that qualitative and social research traditions bring to these tasks. The course explores ways to best manage and explore different kinds of network data in Excel, uses UCINET and NetDraw to produce network diagrams and descriptive statistics. We review other appropriate software related to participants' needs. The course serves as a transition to the associated ACSPRI courses Network Analysis in Social, Business and Political Research and Big Data Analysis for Social Scientists. Network research designs covered in this course are: * Surveys using ego-centric network (egonet) methods * Network-sensitive ethnographies * Sociometric (‘round robin’) ‘whole network’ studies and small group research * Associational/ Affiliation (‘2-mode’) networks (including ethological studies) * Cognitive mapping and socio-cognitive mapping (SCM) For each methodology we consider the best ways to code and manage raw data, the most efficient formats for importing such data into visualisation and analysis software and appropriate measures and statistics for reporting findings.     Fundamentals of Statistics: Online https://dresa.org.au/events/fundamentals-of-statistics-online In this course you will obtain a solid foundation in basic statistical concepts and procedures to progress with some confidence into more advanced topics. This is an introductory unit in statistical methods with the emphasis on statistical techniques applicable to the social sciences, although these introductory techniques are also appropriate to the health sciences. Key examples from journal articles will be presented to illustrate the use and reporting of the statistical techniques covered in this unit. Our approach to learning will be largely non-mathematical, concentrating on concepts rather than mathematical theory. Participants familiar with the use of a statistical software package, but lacking statistical training should also start with this course. SOFTWARE The course will be using the free and open-source software jamovi. The software jamovi can be downloaded from https://www.jamovi.org.download.html While jamovi is built on top of the R statistical language, it has a look and feel very similar to IBM SPSS Statistics and in many ways is easier to use.     Fundamentals of Structural Equation Modelling: Online https://dresa.org.au/events/fundamentals-of-structural-equation-modelling-online Structural equation modelling—or structural equations with latent variables—is a very general statistical model and widely used method. For example, SEM is used in fundamental disciplines such as the social, economic and psychological sciences, the biological sciences, and applied disciplines such as education, health and marketing. SEM has become popular for several reasons, apart from its generality: (i) all SEM models can be represented visually, (ii) a standard notation helps researchers to communicate, and (iii) several software packages for estimating SEM models are readily available (e.g., AMOS, LISREL, Mplus, R). This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of SEM. As well as the statistical theory, an overview of the many applications and capabilities of SEM is given. The course is not particularly mathematical, but instead places emphasis on the fundamental concepts of SEM and how it is used by applied researchers. General aims of the course are for students to develop a readiness for using SEM software and to develop the requisite knowledge for applying SEM methods and models in an intelligent way. Note that participants may be invited to briefly present their own research on the last day of class.     Multi-level Analysis using Mplus: Online https://dresa.org.au/events/multi-level-analysis-using-mplus-online This course is designed as an introduction to the concepts and techniques required to analyse data that is multi-level in nature. (That is, data that is derived from subjects who are nested within groups or data that involves repeated measures that are nested within subjects) In conventional regression analysis it is assumed that subjects are randomly selected and, therefore, all the variance in your dependent variables is due solely to variation amongst individuals. However, in most studies, subjects are clustered within a group and multiple groups are sampled. For example, in an education study, we may have students clustered within multiple classes; in a human resourcing study, we may have employees clustered within multiple work units or teams. In such sampling, although some of the variance in your dependent variables will be due to variation amongst individuals, some the variance in your dependent variables will also be due to variation amongst the groups themselves. In such cases, multilevel analysis (MLA) should be employed to account for the different levels of variation. Repeated measure designs should also be analysed using multilevel analysis because the repeated observations are nested within subjects. For example, in a marketing study, we may have repeated measures of consumers’ attitudes to a brand over the life of a marketing campaign; in an epidemiology study, we may have repeated measures of a health outcome over the life of a drug treatment regime. In such studies, although some of the variance in your dependent variables will be due to variation across the various time occasions, some the variance in your dependent variables will also be due to variation amongst individuals themselves.     Foundations of R for Research: Online https://dresa.org.au/events/foundations-of-r-for-research-online This course is a step by step interactive introduction for participants with no experience with R and RStudio. Notes will be provided and a set of exercises, covering a variety of data sets, will be run together during the lecture and also individually at the end of the day. The course content is particularly suited for those involved in research in the business, education, social and health sciences. Participants will first be introduced to the foundations of R such as libraries, matrix manipulation, objects, and data frames. Participants will use R Markdown in RStudio to generate reports, tables and graphics to Word, PDF and HTML files. Once the foundations have been covered a variety of data management skills will introduced (e.g. filtering data, merging data). The production of descriptive statistics tables and graphs will be covered so that participants can easily use RStudio to explore data and produce reports. The last session on each day will finish with a set of exercises for participants to run on their own and practice what they have learned that day. In terms of analysis, the focus is on the application of social network analysis (SNA) and quantitative text analysis to online data. While the main software used in the course is R, we also introduce Gephi for advanced visualisation. Data collection is via the VOSON R Packages (VOSON Dashboard, vosonSML, voson.tcn). We also cover other important R packages for network and text analysis such as: igraph (network analysis and visualisation), quanteda (quantitative analysis of textual data), tidytext (text mining), and wordcloud (text word clouds). The course will be particularly useful to academics and PhD students who want to become more computationally literate, and those from technical disciplines (e.g. computer science, engineering, information science) who want to become more familiar with social science approaches to analysing social media data. Research design, Experimental, Quasi-Experimental and Non-Experimental, will be covered so students can select the best design and statistical procedure for a research project, and to clarify exactly what claims can be made in relation to findings. It aims to provide participants with an ability to understand, run and interpret procedures. This course will further enhance your ability to understand research-based literature. The level falls between ‘Fundamentals of Statistics’, and the more detailed single procedure based courses. This course will provide a good foundation for progression to the more detailed courses in (Multiple) Regression, Factor Analysis, SEM and Latent Variables using Mplus. On completing this course you should be able to read and understand literature where these procedures are reported, select the appropriate statistical procedure for research, run the procedure, and report the results from an informed base of understanding. As well as allowing a researcher to elicit the changes in a subject (person, business, etc) over time, longitudinal data is also exceedingly powerful as it allows the within-subject and between-subject variance to be estimated independently (generally allowing the parameters in the statistical model to be estimated with a much tighter accuracy than traditional models). This course provides an overview of Longitudinal Data Analysis. As well as the statistical theory, an overview of the many applications and capabilities of LDA is given. The course is not particularly mathematical, but instead places emphasis on the fundamental concepts of LDA and how it is used by applied researchers. The workshop will focus on linear mixed effects models, however we will also go through generalized linear mixed effects models and any new material a participant will need to understand in order to successfully use generalized LME’s. There will be exercises using both types of models. The computer exercises for this workshop will be conducted in Stata. Stata has been chosen as it provides both basic and advanced functionality for conducting longitudinal data analyses. A full set of exercises and solutions in Stata will be provided in this workshop, where they include the Stata syntax required to perform each individual exercise. This workshop examines the key aspects of moving from univariate to multivariate analysis, and the situations and scenarios where multivariate analysis is typically applied. The focus will be on practical application of concepts through examples. **Topics covered will include:** - Motivations for undertaking multivariate analysis - Statistical principles for multivariate analysis - Dimension reduction techniques including principal components analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), correspondence analysis (CA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) This is just one workshop from a modular training programme made up of 1.5 hour workshops, each focusing on a single statistical method offered by Statistical Consulting within the Sydney Informatics Hub. Statistical Workflows giving practical step-by-step instructions applicable in any software are used and include experimental design, exploratory analysis, modelling, assumption testing, model interpretation and presentation of results. The course reviews the possibilities for working with rich network data from interview or online sources and the unique perspectives that qualitative and social research traditions bring to these tasks. The course explores ways to best manage and explore different kinds of network data in Excel, uses UCINET and NetDraw to produce network diagrams and descriptive statistics. We review other appropriate software related to participants' needs. The course serves as a transition to the associated ACSPRI courses Network Analysis in Social, Business and Political Research and Big Data Analysis for Social Scientists. For example, SEM is used in fundamental disciplines such as the social, economic and psychological sciences, the biological sciences, and applied disciplines such as education, health and marketing. SEM has become popular for several reasons, apart from its generality: (i) all SEM models can be represented visually, (ii) a standard notation helps researchers to communicate, and (iii) several software packages for estimating SEM models are readily available (e.g., AMOS, LISREL, Mplus, R). This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of SEM. As well as the statistical theory, an overview of the many applications and capabilities of SEM is given. (That is, data that is derived from subjects who are nested within groups or data that involves repeated measures that are nested within subjects) In conventional regression analysis it is assumed that subjects are randomly selected and, therefore, all the variance in your dependent variables is due solely to variation amongst individuals. However, in most studies, subjects are clustered within a group and multiple groups are sampled. For example, in an education study, we may have students clustered within multiple classes; in a human resourcing study, we may have employees clustered within multiple work units or teams. In such sampling, although some of the variance in your dependent variables will be due to variation amongst individuals, some the variance in your dependent variables will also be due to variation amongst the groups themselves. In such cases, multilevel analysis (MLA) should be employed to account for the different levels of variation. Repeated measure designs should also be analysed using multilevel analysis because the repeated observations are nested within subjects. For example, in a marketing study, we may have repeated measures of consumers’ attitudes to a brand over the life of a marketing campaign; in an epidemiology study, we may have repeated measures of a health outcome over the life of a drug treatment regime. In such studies, although some of the variance in your dependent variables will be due to variation across the various time occasions, some the variance in your dependent variables will also be due to variation amongst individuals themselves. As well as allowing a researcher to elicit the changes in a subject (person, business, etc) over time, longitudinal data is also exceedingly powerful as it allows the within-subject and between-subject variance to be estimated independently (generally allowing the parameters in the statistical model to be estimated with a much tighter accuracy than traditional models). This course provides an overview of Longitudinal Data Analysis. As well as the statistical theory, an overview of the many applications and capabilities of LDA is given. The course is not particularly mathematical, but instead places emphasis on the fundamental concepts of LDA and how it is used by applied researchers. The workshop will focus on linear mixed effects models, however we will also go through generalized linear mixed effects models and any new material a participant will need to understand in order to successfully use generalized LME’s. There will be exercises using both types of models. The computer exercises for this workshop will be conducted in Stata. Stata has been chosen as it provides both basic and advanced functionality for conducting longitudinal data analyses. A full set of exercises and solutions in Stata will be provided in this workshop, where they include the Stata syntax required to perform each individual exercise.
