The course builds from the basic, pioneering methodologies of Social Network Analysis (SNA): survey-based egonet SNA and sociometric, "whole network' SNA, and their extensions, to network sensitive ethnographies, community networks, web-based network surveys and research on social media activities. The course reviews the possibilities for working with rich network data from interview or online sources and the unique perspectives that qualitative and social research traditions bring to these tasks. The course explores ways to best manage and explore different kinds of network data in Excel, uses UCINET and NetDraw to produce network diagrams and descriptive statistics. We review other appropriate software related to participants' needs. The course serves as a transition to the associated ACSPRI courses Network Analysis in Social, Business and Political Research and Big Data Analysis for Social Scientists. Network research designs covered in this course are: * Surveys using ego-centric network (egonet) methods * Network-sensitive ethnographies * Sociometric (‘round robin’) ‘whole network’ studies and small group research * Associational/ Affiliation (‘2-mode’) networks (including ethological studies) * Cognitive mapping and socio-cognitive mapping (SCM) For each methodology we consider the best ways to code and manage raw data, the most efficient formats for importing such data into visualisation and analysis software and appropriate measures and statistics for reporting findings. Particular attention is given to the application of multiple regression to substantive problems in the social and behavioral sciences. By the end of the course, you will understand the principles of multiple regression, and be able to conduct regression analyses, interpret the results, obtain regression diagnostics to test the underlying model assumptions and write-up the results for publication. The course notes provide instructions for using the major statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata or R) for regression. Participants who are considering regression analysis of their own data are encouraged and there will be time for individual consultations. R is a free software environment for scientific and statistical computing and graphics that runs on all common computing platforms. An active and highly skilled developer community works on development and improvement. It has become an environment of choice for the implementation of new methodology. It is at the same time attracting wide attention from statistical application area specialists. The powerful and innovative graphics abilities available in R include the provision of well-designed publication-quality plots. The first day of this course will focus on the R software environment, the remaining days of this workshop will focus on learning advanced statistical methods with R. We will spend an almost equal amount of time in PowerPoint sessions and computer exercises. During the PowerPoint sessions the focus will be on the statistical methods with minimal discussion of computer software. During the computer exercise time you will be using R to apply the statistical methods taught in the lectures. This course covers a number of more complex models including models with mediating variables, models with interactions (moderation), ANOVA and ANCOVA models for latent outcomes, multi-level models (including repeated measures models) and mixture models. Furthermore, introductory courses usually deal only with continuous, normally distributed variables. In terms of analysis, the focus is on the application of social network analysis (SNA) and quantitative text analysis to online data. While the main software used in the course is R, we also introduce Gephi for advanced visualisation. Data collection is via the VOSON R Packages (VOSON Dashboard, vosonSML). We also cover other important R packages for network and text analysis such as: igraph (network analysis and visualisation), quanteda (quantitative analysis of textual data), tidytext (text mining), and wordcloud (text word clouds). The course will be particularly useful to academics and PhD students who want to become more computationally literate, and those from technical disciplines (e.g. computer science, engineering, information science) who want to become more familiar with social science approaches to analysing social media data.     WORKSHOP SERIES: Submitting sequencing data and genome assemblies to the European Nucleotide Archive https://dresa.org.au/events/workshop-series-submitting-sequencing-data-and-genome-assemblies-to-the-european-nucleotide-archive The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) is the European node of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), providing a comprehensive record of the world’s nucleotide sequencing information, covering raw sequencing data, sequence assembly information and functional annotation. The three INSDC members (ENA, NCBI-SRA and DDBJ-SRA) routinely exchange data which ensures nucleotide data is archived and shared across geographically dispersed locations (Europe, USA and Japan). The ENA is provided by EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute, EMBL-EBI. ENA team members Dr Joana Pauperio and Maira Ihsan will deliver a series of related workshops on submitting raw read sequencing, Metagenome-Assembled Genome (MAG), environmental DNA (eDNA) and genome assembly and annotation data to ENA.* Each workshop will begin with an introduction to the ENA data and metadata model. You will then be guided through hands-on exercises using example data sets to practice data submission via one of three submission routes: Interactive web-based submission: these are completed by filling out web forms in your browser and downloading template spreadsheets that can be completed off-line and uploaded to ENA. Command-line based submission: Data submissions of this type are completed via the command line using ENA's bespoke Webin-CLI program. This validates your submissions entirely before you complete them, allowing you maximum control of the process. Webin-CLI is the only way to submit assembled genomes and transcriptomes. It will provide an interactive step-by-step guide to running these models and key diagnostics using the R software platform. Regression modelling is a foundation in data science and a must for anyone wanting to venture into this space. Understanding when and how to use linear and non-linear regression models in everyday research is an essential skill for any analyst. Linear and non-linear regression models are commonly used to quantify the relationship between two or more variables by predicting a key outcome of interest. These models are used as effective and powerful tools to control for the potential confounding effect of extraneous variables and/or developing highly predictive models. Linear regression relates to continuous outcomes and is a fundamental regression technique in data science. Logistic regression is used when the outcome of interest is categorical and a fundamental classification technique in data science. When there is no theoretical or mechanistic model to suggest a particular functional form to describe the relationship between two or more variables of interest, Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) can used as they fit a nonparametric curve to the data without requiring pre-defining any particular mathematical model to describe the nonlinearity. The course reviews the possibilities for working with rich network data from interview or online sources and the unique perspectives that qualitative and social research traditions bring to these tasks. The course explores ways to best manage and explore different kinds of network data in Excel, uses UCINET and NetDraw to produce network diagrams and descriptive statistics. We review other appropriate software related to participants' needs. The three INSDC members (ENA, NCBI-SRA and DDBJ-SRA) routinely exchange data which ensures nucleotide data is archived and shared across geographically dispersed locations (Europe, USA and Japan). The ENA is provided by EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute, EMBL-EBI. ENA team members Dr Joana Pauperio and Maira Ihsan will deliver a series of related workshops on submitting raw read sequencing, Metagenome-Assembled Genome (MAG), environmental DNA (eDNA) and genome assembly and annotation data to ENA.* Each workshop will begin with an introduction to the ENA data and metadata model. Linear and non-linear regression models are commonly used to quantify the relationship between two or more variables by predicting a key outcome of interest. These models are used as effective and powerful tools to control for the potential confounding effect of extraneous variables and/or developing highly predictive models. Linear regression relates to continuous outcomes and is a fundamental regression technique in data science.
